Deaconess Partnership Offers Assistance with Hispanic Outreach
The Minnesota South District, together with The Hoffmann Institute and Woodbury Lutheran Church (WLC), support the ministry of Deaconess Luz Guerrero, who connects with the Hispanic community in the Twin Cities Metro area. Currently, she teaches Bible and ESL in the Georgetown neighborhood in Bloomington. “Four Mexican ladies and I meet once a week in one of their homes. They are taking turns to host the class and their children stay in a second townhome with the sitter. Mt. Calvary provided the sitter and snacks for the children last season. Lisa Gibson, a CSP student has been volunteering lately.”
Luz volunteers with CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio), St. Paul, teaching ESL and mentoring Hispanic high school students. She has organized volunteers from Concordia and WLC who mentor high school students who dream of attending college one day. In addition to CLUES, Luz is on the Mt. Calvary Richfield ESL team along with other members. They offer a 10 week class and childcare. Luz gives spiritual care for women at a Hispanic women’s shelter in East St. Paul, participates in Jail ministry with Woodbury Lutheran, teaches Spanish at WLC pre-school, and assists with planning and leading mission trips to Latin America. She is available for consulting on Latino outreach by contacting the Hoffmann Institute.
